“We didn’t learn racism alone; we can’t unlearn it alone”
Rev. angel Kyodo williams
The Great Radical Race Read invites the nation and beyond to join in a five-week, transnational collective practice to transform race one circle, one conversation, one radical read at a time. The first-ever Read of 2020 was kicked off by a Radical Read-a-thon, a 12 1/2 hour live online reading of Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation. Weekly Race Education Awareness ? – READ-in sessions led by Rev. angel combine with a guidebook of practices, smaller-group meetings to discuss a book chosen from the GR3 bookstack, and weekly action assignments.
Envisioned as a yearly event, the Great Radical Race Read (Gr3) project was created prior to 2020’s twin pandemics of coronavirus and the scourge of white supremacy expressed through both police brutality and vigilante violence. Its inauguration in the midst of these pandemics amplifies the pivotal moment of reflection and reckoning that arises from them: the potential impact of GR3’s national education & conversation practice becomes ever more poignant, timely and necessary in this moment. Given the foundational history of racism in the United States and beyond, it will also remain pivotal for transforming race in the wake of that inaugural moment.
